S.O.A.P. Bible Study Method is one of my favorite methods of studying the Bible. It’s an easy and simple way that doesn’t drag the study time down. The great thing about the S.O.A.P. method is that you can do verse by verse. You can also do chapters without feeling that it’s too much information. S.O.A.P. is very simple and you can go as deep as you want with the verses.
Inviting God to your study time
It’s always a good by inviting God to your study time. Ask Him to show you His word and give you His message as He meant it for you. No two people will get the same exact message from the same passage. It’s important that you receive God’s message as the Bible’s passage applies to you.
What does S.O.A.P. stand for?
S – Scripture
O – Observe
A – Apply
P – Prayer
S – Scripture
Read the scripture three times. Read it to yourself quietly once and then read it out loud once and then write it down. This helps you to remember it, retain it and then think about it.
O – Observe
Observe what the scripture is saying. what is it actually saying to you. You might have to read the verse before and the verse after it if you are reading single verses. If you are reading chapters what are the 5 W’s and the meaning of the chapter? Does it have a command or commands? Is it prophetic? Is it about the Evil One? Is it a story about a Biblical Character and if so what is he or she doing, feeling or sharing in the story? Is the chapter about faith? family? Dive deep.
A – Apply
Now it’s time to dive deep into how this scripture applies to you. Can you apply it to your life and how? Will you apply it to your life? What changes can or will you make?
P – Pray
The last step in the study method is to pray to the Lord to ask you to retain the things He’s helped you learn in His word and to apply it to your life. To ask Him for guidance, strength and courage in the life changes you may plan to make. Don’t be shy, have a heart to heart conversation with Him and don’t forget after talking to Him to sit quietly for a bit and still yourself and listen.
